Nobel prize winner opens Orihuela museum
December 2, 2008The 2006 Nobel prize winner for physics, professor George Smoot, was a guest of honour at the inauguration of a new interactive science museum in Orihuela last week.
Professor Smoot unveiled the plaque to celebrate the opening of the first museum of its kind in the Vega Baja region, accompanied by Orihuela mayor, Monica Lorente.
The museum, situated on the campus of the Miguel Hernandez University, features 32 interactive areas touching all aspects of science, including optical illusions, the human heart and electricity. Prior to the plaque unveiling, press and invited guests were shown how science affects our daily lives, and also how mythical subjects such as Jacob’s Ladder and Tantalus have a scientific explanation. The tricks used at fairgrounds to ensure the probability of winning a prize is almost nil were also explained.
The museum, nicknamed MUDIC, is open to students throughout the Vega Baja region.
